Summer Time is Here! Hot Weather Preparedness

As we move into the summer months here in Washington, it’s important to remember that the risk of serious health problems increases as temperatures rise. Older adults should take extra precautions to stay cool, stay hydrated, and take breaks from the heat.

Certain medications and health conditions may also increase your sensitivity to warmer temperatures. Be sure to check with your doctor for any precautions you may need to take.

Some other actions you can take as the weather warms up are:

  • Check in on your friends, family, and neighbors who may be at higher risk.
  • Spend some time in an air-conditioned building like a mall, movie theater, or library if you are able to. Some cities in King County may offer cooling centers for those who need them.
  • Perform outdoor activities in the morning or evening when the temperatures are cooler.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Limit caffeine and alcohol as they can be dehydrating.
  • Watch out for signs of heat exhaustion or heatstroke. For example, high body temperature (above 103° F), red skin, rapid pulse, nausea, or confusion.

While summertime here in the Pacific Northwest can be beautiful, it’s important to remember to take care of yourself and others.
