February is a great time to focus on ways that all of us can ensure greater independence for aging adults in King County. For almost 60 years, Sound Generations has been helping older adults hold onto more of their autonomy through services tailored to their aging journeys.
Some ways to participate this month:
• Establish a regular weekly check-in. Aging adults and younger community members can connect to each other—discovering resources, providing and receiving services, and experiencing the flow of initiatives that true friendships help to create.
• Get connected to senior centers. These centers do more than have activities that promote higher levels of health, social interaction, and life satisfaction. They also link aging adults to many community resources. Most aging adults value a strong feeling of community that helps them hold onto a sense of agency and independence.
• Take advantage of Washington State’s TED Program. For aging adults experiencing the sudden or gradual impairment of their communication abilities, virtual communication can be vital for their health, safety, and quality of life.
The TED Program offers telecommunications equipment and training. It distributes specialized telecommunication equipment that enables State residents to stay in touch and reach out. The TED program can help those who are deaf, hard of hearing, live without speech, or have a speech impairment to receive equipment and training in order to connect with people/business/medical offices outside of their home. Training is provided virtually or in the home. Training is always free and equipment is often free as determined by a sliding scale. Learn more here.
