Falls are a leading cause of injury for older adults, but they are not inevitable.

Fall prevention programs for older adults teach practical strategies to build skills and confidence, and include balance and core exercises designed to improve stability and mobility.

A Matter of Balance

Many people experience fear of falling as they age. A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls is proven to reduce this fear and increase activity.

Developed at the Roybal Center at Boston University, A Matter of Balance is a nationally recognized balance and fall prevention program. The program empowers older adults to live confident, coordinated, and independent lives.

In eight 2-hour sessions, trained coaches lead participants in activities designed to help participants to:

  • Identify and address fall risks and view falls and fear of falling as controllable
  • Learn balance and core exercises to improve strength, stability and coordination
  • Develop realistic goals and personal strategies to increase activity and avoid falls

A Matter of Balance is offered in senior and community centers throughout King County. Contact deidred@soundgenerations.org for more information.

“A Matter of Balance was most helpful – it made me more aware of what can be done to assure safety at home… Great to share and learn!

“We feel stronger and in more control of our bodies.”

“I’m already noticing a difference in my physical being. I’m sure I’m a little more mobile than I had been and plan to continue these exercises. Hopefully, I’ll be jumping over the moon – soon!”
