Celebrate National Volunteer Appreciation Month this April!

“Being a [Volunteer] Driver has great flexibility and
the only commitments are from your heart!” – Betty Morrison

The work we do at Sound Generations and our Community Partner Sites would not be possible without the passion, commitment and generosity of the 2,294 individuals who dedicated over 174,955 hours in 2017!  From coordinating meal delivery, greeting guests at fundraising events, or providing activity support at a local Senior Center, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers who help us achieve our mission to connect older adults and adults with disabilities in King County with vital services to help them thrive.

One such extraordinary volunteer, Elizabeth Morrison, has been with Sound Generations for nearly 21 years!  A volunteer driver who transport seniors to and from their medical and other essential appointments, Betty, as she likes to be called, is vivacious, humorous and full of energy, yet she deflects any mention of praise and emphatically insists,

“It’s a win-win. They truly enrich my life and provide hints on how to age in a positive way!” She adds, while leaning forward with a smile and a slight whisper, “Seniors think I do it for them. Ha! I do it for me!”

She recounts many memorable experiences and some heartbreaking ones too during her two decades here. That hasn’t stopped Betty from volunteering an astonishing 1000+ rides with Sound Generations and recruiting others. For all those who may rule out volunteering due to their busy lives, Betty counters that she started in 1997 while working as a Northshore School District bus driver and raising three young children. She stresses that there are no barriers to being a volunteer and her position as a Volunteer Driver “has great flexibility and the only commitment is from your heart!”

Besides transporting seniors for us each week, Betty also commits her time to the American Cancer Society. Her clients have changed over the years, and so too has her involvement with our organization. She’s attending fundraising luncheons, dinners, and on top of everything else, donates regularly to Sound Generations!

We are beyond blessed to have such an outstanding volunteer. This April, National Volunteer Appreciation Month, is for all the Betty Morrisons and countless amazing volunteers who fulfill positions at the downtown offices, throughout King County, and our Community Partner Sites in Shoreline, Ballard, Lake City, Central Area, West Seattle and Sno-Valley. THANK YOU!!!
